Year 3

Mrs Duddridge, Mrs Evans and Miss Verani are teachers for Year 3, an important year for children’s learning. It is the beginning of Key Stage 2, where the children work towards becoming independent learners in a stimulating and friendly environment. In addition to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science the children also study other areas of the curriculum. For example, in History they investigate the lives of ancient Romans and follow the battles of the fearsome Vikings. These areas are brought to life through drama activities which include the much anticipated Year 3 production! The learning continues outside of the classroom with termly visits to local areas of interest and of relevance to the curriculum, such as the geography field trip to Fara Gera d’Adda to study contrasting urban environments.

Year 4

In Year 4, the pupils will find the programme enjoyable and rewarding. The teachers,Mrs Ingram, Mr. Small and Miss Hanford aim to provide an effective learning environment. Children engage in stimulating classroom activities which help to broaden their understanding and knowledge. The teachers encourage discussion and debate within the class to enable the children to develop their listening skills and to learn how to express their opinions clearly. Pupils are encouraged to continue to take responsibility for themselves by remembering essential equipment, handing in homework tasks on time and by looking after their personal property.
Trips linked to Science and History topics have included visits to the Natural History Museum and the Castello Sforzesco Museum in Milan. Children in Year 4 also visit Cassano D'Adda as part of their Geography studies.

Year 5

The Year 5 class teachers are Mrs Brook, Mrs Hayes and Mrs Lyons. In Year 5, we place a strong emphasis on independence, building upon the organisational skills learnt in previous years. We particularly aim to develop, in meaningful contexts, the oral presentation skills of the children we teach. We encourage all children to respond by answering questions, by providing explanations of processes or by giving short demonstrations. The ability to express both ideas and knowledge precisely and concisely is an important area of development for us.

We focus on building confidence in every child we teach, so that they are ready to manage their responsibilities successfully and take an active role in the school community.

We enjoy opportunities to visit places that are closely linked to areas of the Year 5 curriculum. For example, our study of water and its uses involves an informative visit to a local, modern water treatment plant. Other visits include the Planetarium, La Scala Workshop and a geography field trip to a local town.

Year 6

The Year 6 teachers, Miss Florio, Mrs Richardson and Miss Doegar take the children, amongst other places, down rivers, over mountains, on fairground rides, back to Ancient Greece and to Kenya and beyond. As the oldest year group in Lower School, children in Year 6 have, of course, the important role of setting an example to younger children in the school. They are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and to show high levels of independence in preparation for Upper School. During the year students have the chance to get involved in a number of sporting, social and extra-curricular activities. Highlights of the year include trips to The River Adda and the African Village in Bergamo; a sponsored walk for Schoolchildren for Children; Bonfire Night; The Carol Concert at Carmine and other musical events; Book Week and the Summer Fete. Twice a year children attend an unforgettable assembly in which the teachers don jazzy outfits and strut their stuff led by the inimitable Miss Dean in all her holiday glory.
