Welcome to the Geography Department! Geography at Sir James is taught by four committed and enthusiastic geographers in a well resourced department. The department offers a broad and relevant curriculum that deals with important contemporary issues such as globalisation, the environment, population change, natural hazards and urbanisation. These are studied at a range of scales from local to global.

The KS3 course is based on the UK National Curriculum and is resourced primarily by the Oxford Geography 123 programme.
Both GCSE students follow the Edexcel A specification and these are supported by a range of resources.
Fieldwork is an integral part of all key stages and students visit a range of locations including Piacenza in Year 9, the Isle of Elba in Year 10 and Holland at IB.

Aims

  • Stimulate a curiosity in the outside world and an interest in learning.
  • Enable students to acquire and use geographical knowledge of places and environments.
  • Encourage students to develop an understanding of the world as it is and as it is becoming.
  • Develop the skills of a geographer and to encourage their independent use.
  • Allow students to clarify and develop their own values in relation to geographical issues.
  • Provide opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom.

    Facilities and Resources

Geography lessons are taught in two specialist rooms. Both have video-projecting facilities, with the main room 211 also having an interactive whiteboard.
The department is well equipped with a range of audio-visual resources including videos and DVDs. Both staff and students prepare presentations for classes.
Room 211 has its own geographical library with a range of books for all levels, but with an emphasis on texts for IB.
The department subscribes to Geography Review, Geo Active and Geo File, which provide up to date information for GCSE and IB groups.
There is also a good range of fieldwork and weather measuring equipment.

    KS5 - Geography at IB
Geography students at Sir James follow the IB programme within the Group 3 family of subjects, Individuals and Societies. Embedded in the syllabus is a wide range of investigative and analytical skills, with an emphasis on critical thinking, particularly at Higher Level. As with other Geography courses studied lower down the school, fieldwork is an important element of both Higher and Standard Level students. Last year the IB group visited the Hague in Holland to collect data for their report.
