Aim
The Upper School Italian Program is for Italian Nationals and for International students with mother-tongue
or equivalent levels of Italian (Lingua Uno) for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The Lingua Uno Program is separate
from the Lingua Due (L2) Program provided for international students who are not fluent in Italian.
Organisation of the Courses
The introduction of the IB at the SJHS has led to several reforms in the teaching of Italian, mainly
because the IB is recognized by Italian Universities and therefore the “Esame di Idoneità”
will no longer be required at the end of Year 13 (effective for the School Year 2009-2010). This has repercussions
for all Key Stages in the Upper School.
One important change which was introduced in 2007-2008 is the new Pre-IB
course for Years 10 and 11. In the academic year 2008-2009 further revisions have been made for Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9).
The most important feature of the new Italian L1 Program in Key Stage 3 is that it has been divided into two groups:
Italian Lingua Uno National Curriculum Course (L1 INC)to prepare students for the Italian State Scuola Media Exams
Italian Lingua Uno Mother Tongue and Literature Course (L1) to take students up to mother tongue competence in
Italian language and literature.
These changes have been accompanied by increased collaboration between the Italian and other departments of the School. In order to
promote interdisciplinary projects and in order to avoid any overlap of contents in the various subject areas, the Italian Department
collaborates with all other departments of the school on a regular basis.
- Key Stage 4 Courses (Year 10, 11 Pre IB course)
For the “Italian Higher Level” course in Year 12 and 13, which is indispensable for access
to Italian Universities, thorough preparation is necessary.
Providing such preparation is the purpose of the new Pre-IB Italian Culture courses.
- Key Stage 5 Courses (Year 12, 13 IB Italian A1: HL, SL)
From 2008/2009 school year, Sir James Henderson British School offers a new syllabus leading to the award of the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The two-year Italian Literature course (Year 12 and 13) is among the subjects in Group 1
and is offered at HL level (advanced) and SL (standard).
