KEY STAGE 3

Aims and objectives
Students learning a Modern Foreign Language at Key Stage 3 will begin to understand, speak, read and write in Italian and French.

Students gain confidence in Listening and Responding, Speaking, Reading and Responding, and Writing as outlined in the British National Curriculum. They increase their cultural awareness by communicating not only with their language teachers but also with native speakers either personally or using electronic mail.

By learning a Modern Foreign Language students:
  1. acquire knowledge and understanding of the target language
  2. develop language skills
  3. develop language – learning skills
  4. develop cultural awareness.
The five areas of experience covered in Year 7 to Year 9 are the following:
  1. Everyday Activities: Life at home; food and drink; health and fitness, School
  2. Personal and Social Life: Myself, family and friends; free time and social activities
  3. The World Around Us: Home town and local area; the environment and society
  4. The World of Work: Further education and work; language and communication in the work place
  5. The International World: Travel at home and abroad, world events and issues
All the major areas of grammar are covered in KS3. Grammar is outlined in the text book but is supplemented by worksheets and explanatory notes devised by the language teacher. CD-Roms are used for oral conversation and grammar practice. Topics covered include:
  • Gender
  • Definite and indefinite articles
  • Agreement of nouns and adjectives
  • Affirmative, negative and interrogative statements
  • Irregular plurals of nouns
  • Present tense of regular and irregular verbs
  • Present perfect tense
  • Possessive pronouns and adjectives
  • Reflexive verbs in the present tense
  • Reflexive verb tense in the present perfect.
  • Combined, direct and indirect pronouns
  • The conditional (only courtesy forms; ‘Vorrei’) .

KEY STAGE 4

Aims and objectives
  1. To develop the ability to use language effectively for purposes of practical communication.
  2. To develop the ability to use language imaginatively and creatively.
  3. To develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning.
  4. To acquire the skills and attitudes which will form a sound basis for further study, work and leisure.
  5. To promote the learning of more general applications:
    • use of reference materials including dictionaries;
    • use of information technology;
    • analysing and drawing inferences;
    • summarising, reporting and explaining.
  6. To develop the pupils’ understanding of themselves, their own cultures and the culture and civilisation of other countries.
  7. To promote independence in language learning and usage.
  8. To provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation.
Content
The programme will be taught across a variety of topics ranging from “life at home” to “world events and issues”. All topics relate both to National Curriculum requirements and to those of the examining boards. Teaching will incorporate a range of methods from pair-work through to whole-class activities and will be done in the target language

KEY STAGE 5

Skills developed during the course
Students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills further and develop an understanding of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.



What could I go on to do at the end of these courses?
Proficiency in at least one or two foreign languages is helpful for success in the following career paths: law, European and company law, banking, insurance, Diplomatic Service, Civil Service, Armed Forces, police (Interpol), science, research, publishing, journalism, public relations, accountancy, management, personnel, leisure and travel sectors, librarianship, teaching, interpreting and translating.
