SJHS News and Events

A major part of the music programme includes the graded exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music ( ABRSM ) both in practical subjects and theory. All Students going into the Upper School take the Grade 1 theory exam at the age of 11 or 12 and those choosing GCSE music also do Grade 5. The majority of students learning an instrument at some stage do an ABRSM practical exam and our results here have been declared “outstanding” by the Chief Examiner. We frequently have pupils still in the Lower School gaining “ Distinction” in Grades 4 and 5. The highest achievers in the upper school have also gained the DipABRSM diploma, a considerable achievement at school age considering that the level is well into university standard.

The SJHS is also the centre for northern Italy for the ABRSM and has hosted conferences and seminars for national events, mainly for Italian music schools starting to with the system. The leading managers of the ABRSM have frequently visited and led conferences and in 2010 and 2011 we had visits both from the new Chief Executive, Guy Perricone, and from the new Chief Examiner, John Holmes. A recent agreement between the ABRSM and CURCI editions has further enhanced the status of the SJHS as the most prestigious ABRSM centre in Italy.

In addition to the ABRSM, the school also offers exams in the Trinity/Guildhall system on electric guitar, bass and drum kit.
